TRAUMA-INFORMED ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER CULTURAL CAPABILITY

This course is designed as an introduction to trauma and its impacts on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. On completion of the course learners will:

• Be able to define what trauma is; including its origins, complex, relational, transgenerational and inter-generational trauma, and its manifestations (responses and behaviours).
• Understand the impact and context of trauma through first-hand.
• Understand vicarious/Secondary Trauma.
• Understand culturally informed approaches to healing trauma.
• Understand about referral pathways.
• Be able to demonstrate trauma-informed policy development and service delivery; what it looks like for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
• Be able to demonstrate trauma-informed practices of safety in the workplace; what it looks like for all employees; how it works if the employee has a trauma history.
• Be able to evaluate policies and procedures through a trauma-informed lens.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

This course is recommended to all individuals, educators and employees of all organisations. It provides a strong foundation knowledge to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander trauma in a non-confrontational and self-paced environment. It serves as an essential pre-cursor to face-to-face workshops, increasing the cultural safety of those sessions, as well as providing for a more engaged and applied workshop environment. It is recommended that participants in this course complete the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural competence course prior to ensure you have the base level knowledge and context on which to build the additional trauma-informed capabilities.

HOW DOES THE COURSE RELATE TO AHPRA OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY COMPETENCIES?

Cultural safety training is recognised by AHPRA as a core requirement for registered practitioners and a core component of the Occupational Therapy Competency Standards:

• understands and responds to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health philosophies, leadership, research and practices 
• maintains current knowledge for cultural responsiveness to all groups in the practice setting
• maintains and improves currency of knowledge, skills and new evidence for practice by adhering to the requirements for continuing professional development
• identifies and applies best available evidence in professional practice and decision making

The Centre for Cultural Competence Australia (CCCA) is a majority Indigenous owned organisation dedicated to the training and development of individuals and organisations in the field of ‘Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Competence’.

This course has been developed by CCCA in partnership with We Al-li, one of the foremost Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander trauma experts in Australia. We Al-li is a trauma-informed, trauma-specific educational and practice-based approach that promotes health, well-being, and sustainable pathways of positive change for individuals, families and communities at both a personal and professional level.

This course is delivered online and provides a flexible learning platform. It typically takes between 4 to 5 hours to complete, available 24/7 it allows you to complete the course in your own time at a time and pace convenient to you.
