PAIN SCIENCE AND PAIN MANAGEMENT OVER THE LIFESPAN : MODELS OF PRACTICE AND PAIN MANAGEMENT

This course will provide understanding on embed pain neuroscience in occupational therapy clinical reasoning and how to apply theoretical frameworks to assessment and treatment of pain in the context of various life stages.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

This course is suitable for new graduates, early career therapists and experienced therapists.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of the workshop participants will learn:

  • To embed pain neuroscience in occupational therapy clinical reasoning
  • To apply occupational therapy theoretical frameworks to assessment and treatment of pain in the context of various life stages
  • International Classification of Function
  • Canadian Model of Occupational Performance and Environment
  • Model of Human Occupation
  • Sensory processing and modulation, including interoception
  • Theoretical frameworks of life-stage development
  • To integrate learning through case studies and small group discussion

PRESENTERS

 Dr Cate Sinclair
 

Dr. Cate Sinclair is an occupational therapist with over 25 years of experience who has a private practice with a focus on pain management and sensory modulation. She previously worked as the senior occupational therapist at the Children’s Pain Management Clinic at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne. Cate has clinical pain management experience across the lifespan with children, adolescents and adults experiencing persistent pain. Cate completed a Doctor of Philosophy with the University of Queensland in 2018, investigating the relationships between sensory modulation, attachment and functional capacity for children and adolescents with persistent pain. She has presented her work at national and international conferences, and publication. Cate completed a Master’s in Art Therapy in 2001, and Bachelor of Applied Science in Occupational Therapy in 1986.

 Fiona Thomas

Ms Fiona Thomas has worked as an occupational therapist in the field of musculoskeletal rehab and pain management for 25 years. She started her OT career in hand therapy which lead into industrial rehabilitation/ work conditioning programmes and then into pain management. She has worked both in private and public hospital settings and is currently at the Caulfield Pain Management and Research Centre and Pain Specialists Australia. She received a small hospital research grant in 2010 to look at self-efficacy and functional outcomes and has been actively involved in the research arm of the unit. At present her interests are in promoting the role of occupational therapy approaches within pain management, promoting activity and work engagement within a pain population, biofeedback, graded motor imagery and the therapeutic value of activity in modifying pain and sensory processing mechanisms. She has presented at the pain management special interest group, Australian Pain Society conferences, MOVE and on functional approaches in the elderly pain population for the NARI (National Aging and Research Institute). Fiona is currently the occupational therapy representative on the Australian Pain Society Relationships Committee.
